The Old House Has Fallen
The old house has fallen.
I don’t know what part gave in
Or gave up
First.
Or if every last beam and joist
Just saw it coming
And gave up the ghost
All at once.
Why hold up a house
All alone?
Said the kitchen wall.
I can’t do it by myself,
Said the roof.
So it all came tumbling down
Dreams and memories all thrown about
In a cloud of debris
And sadness
To settle low to the earth
And get blown to Oklahoma
By the next unforgiving wind.
Who would have thought
It would all cave in
For want of care?
Anger and loneliness
Make one blind
To the little things
That let a home,
Or love,
Make it through the ages.
